Unlike that food wrapper, you can’t throw your old laptops into the garbage. But what else can you do with it? You can bring your laptop to recycling drop-offs so it can be recycled and kept out of landfills or you can donate it. This wikiHow article will show you how to dispose of old laptops in Australia.

StepsMethod 1Method 1 of 2:Recycling Your Laptop

1Go to https://www.recyclingnearyou.com.au/computers in a web browser. You can use any web browser to navigate to this site and find a recycling drop-off near you.

2Enter your postcode or region into the text field. If you are a business, click the link below with the “businessrecycling.com.au” text to see options for businesses.

3Click Search. You’ll see a list of dropoff locations as well as businesses that will accept your laptop so it can be picked up. Click Map to see a map of the locations.XMethod 2Method 2 of 2:Donating Your Laptop

1Reset your laptop. Many laptops have a “factory reset” option that will let you erase your computer’s data and reset it to how it was when you bought it. For Windows 10 users, the “reset” option is in Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Get Started (Reset this PC) > Remove Everything > Remove files and clean the drive > Reset. For macOS, enter “Recovery Mode” then select Disk Utility > Your Disk > Erase.

2Go to https://recyclingnearyou.com.au/community-recycling-initiatives/ in a web browser. You can use any web browser to navigate here and look for donation centers.

3Scroll down to the “Computer Reuse/Refurbish” header and click the links in your area. There are about 1-3 links for each area; some of those links to donation centers also have multiple dropoff points. You might need to call to arrange a donation pick-up.For instance, if you are in the ACT area, you’ll want to check out the links under the header “ACT.”

4Investigate https://businessrecycling.com.au/ and https://recyclingnearyou.com.au/ (if none of the above are close to you). These websites list both recycling and refurbishing centers, so make sure you know which one you’re going to (you don’t want to get your computer ready for donation only to figure out you’ve gone to a recycling dropoff). You can also look under the “Donation Website” header to find more links that will give you a few more dropoff locations.
